How to Change a Wisconsin LLC’s Name or Address

Darius F. Sanders, Founder of Wi Filings Darius F. Sanders · Founder, Wi Filings · Published 2026-08-09

Before submitting a Wisconsin LLC update, identify exactly which record needs to change. Your LLC’s legal name, principal office, and registered agent are separate items. Changing one does not automatically update every other record held by banks, agencies, or vendors.

Changing the legal name: Form 504

Start by searching the proposed name in DFI records. A search is preliminary: DFI makes the final determination when it examines the filing. Review our Wisconsin LLC name-search guide before ordering signs or committing to a new brand.

Form 504 asks for the existing LLC name, the date its initial articles were filed, the amendment text, and an authorized signature. The current form lists a $40 state filing fee. Optional expedited processing costs extra. State charges are separate from any professional filing-service charge.

Describe the actual change to the articles and retain the accepted filing with the company’s records. Confirm internal approval requirements before signing; a form’s availability does not determine who has authority to approve the change.

Changing the principal office

The principal office is the location of the LLC’s principal executive offices. DFI’s annual-report instructions include a separate field for it. Review that entry when preparing the report; if the record needs an update before then, check the appropriate DFI filing for your circumstances.

Appointing a registered agent does not automatically change your principal office. Choose the address that fits the company’s actual situation. A Wisconsin attorney can advise you if that choice is unclear. See our address-record guide for related privacy considerations.

Changing the registered agent or office

Form 13 updates the registered-agent and registered-office record. It currently lists a $25 state filing fee. The registered office must be the agent’s physical business location in Wisconsin, and the required consent or notification must be handled.

DFI also permits relevant agent updates on an annual report. If your report is already due, compare those paths before paying for a separate filing. Our registered-agent change guide explains the service choice in more detail.

Use a separate checklist for other accounts

After DFI accepts the change, review your bank and payment processor, contracts, insurance, licenses, website, and billing details. Keep a copy of the acceptance notice so each organization can tell you what evidence it needs.

Tax records have their own update process. The IRS business-name-change instructions depend on the business’s tax classification. Do not assume a DFI amendment automatically updates the IRS or requires a new EIN.

Updating a current address also does not guarantee removal from historical filings or third-party websites. If your concern is public exposure, review which records contain the address before deciding what to file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Wisconsin LLC name on the annual report?

Use the LLC amendment process to change the legal name in the articles. Annual-report updates and a name amendment are different filings. Confirm name availability before submitting the amendment.

Does changing my registered agent also change my principal office?

No. These are separate entries. Review and update the principal-office record separately when it needs to change.

Will an address update erase my old address from filed documents?

Do not assume it will. Updating the current record is different from removing historical filings or information copied by other websites.
